Make a timestamped tracklist for SoundCloud
Prepare a time-and-title tracklist for your SoundCloud mix description using the timings in a supported DJ session or DAW project.
Build the list from the file your DJ software already made, and paste it in.
Drop your project or session file here
Ableton .als, FL Studio .flp, rekordbox .cue, Traktor .nml or Serato .session.
Your file is read in this browser tab. Nothing is uploaded anywhere.
No file to hand?
Run a real mix through it and see exactly what comes out. A twelve-track recording running an hour and a quarter.
On your phone?
Your project file is probably on another computer. Send yourself the link and pick this up there.
What you get back
A list ready to paste into a YouTube, SoundCloud or Mixcloud description.
0:00 Kestrel Lane - First Light 6:12 Ardent Fields - Paper Harbour 13:15 Nomi Vale - Slow Transit 19:48 The Quiet Wire - Understory
The description is the tracklist
There is no separate tracklist field and no chapter markers. Whatever you put in the description is what people read, so a plain list of times and track names is both the convention and the most useful thing you can do.
That is the default format here: a time, a space, then the track, one per line. No numbering, no brackets, nothing that gets in the way of scanning it.
Timed comments do the rest
SoundCloud's timed comments are the other half of navigation on the platform, and they work best when the description has already told people what is where. A listener who can see that a track starts at 42:10 is far more likely to go there and say something.
Some DJs also drop a comment at each transition themselves. If you want to do that, the same list gives you the times to use.
Long mixes and the hour mark
Once a mix passes an hour the times need an hours field, or a reader has to work out whether 82:14 is eighty-two minutes in. That switch happens automatically here, so a two-hour set reads as 1:22:14 rather than something a listener has to do arithmetic on.
Questions
- Does SoundCloud support chapters like YouTube?
- No. There are no chapter markers on SoundCloud, so the timestamped list in your description is the navigation. That is why getting it right matters more there than on a platform that builds chapters for you.
- What format should a SoundCloud tracklist be in?
- A time, a space, then the track name, one per line. That is the convention listeners expect and it is the default output here, so you can copy and paste without reformatting.
- Can I use the same list on YouTube?
- Yes, though YouTube adds rules: the first entry must be at 0:00, there must be at least three, and none can be under ten seconds. Switch to the YouTube preset and those are checked for you before you paste.
